GLOBAL: Intellectual freedom reports worldwide



In Iran, the jail pro-democracy activist Abdul Moment student refused medical leave despite serious and worsening health problems. An Iranian graduate student at an American university, in jail for five months in Tehran allegedly plotting conspiracy, asked for a chance to defend himself in a fair trial. In Saudi Arabia prominent scholar Suffuse AL-Ahmad was arrested for criticizing the lack of judicial process the authorities' security detainees. Malaysian students knew support in 25 cities around the world free and fair elections in the country, and in Zimbabwe treason charges against six activists were downgraded to inciting public violence.

Iran jailed student activist refused medical leave

  Abdul Moment, an Iranian student activist imprisoned since 2009, refused medical leave despite grave health problems, Radio Free Europe reported on 12 July.

Moment, who is serving a nearly five-year prison sentence in Even prison in Tehran, is spokesman for Iran's largest reform student organization, the Office for the promotion of unity, or order in e-Talkie-e-Vanda. He was named a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International.


While in detention, Moment’s health deteriorated and he was admitted twice to hospital May with health complications.

His wife Fatima Nevadian, Moment refused medical leave as a result of an open letter to Ayatollah Khomeini, Supreme Leader of Iran's addressed, and published in September 2010.

The letter describes the physical and psychological abuse he was subjected to while in detention. The Iranian authorities did not respond to the allegations of torture.

While in detention Moment serious back problems, a heart and a complication skin disease that requires specialized treatment developed. He also intestinal problems, which worsened with his recent hunger strike last month with 11 other political prisoners after the death of two other prisoners of conscience to protest.

On June 23, after five days of hunger strike, Moment was transferred to Even hospital with another detainee deteriorated to their health seriously.

Moment was arrested on June 20, 2009, in the aftermath of the disputed 2009 presidential election, at the headquarters of the free citizens, a group that Midi Karrabul political opponent.

After a forced confession and a hearing behind closed doors, Moment was sentenced to six years in prison for participating in post-election events and an extra two years in prison for activities against national security, cost dating from 2007.

An appeals court reduced his sentence to four years and 11 months in prison.
