His remarks were prompted by a particular speaker at the conference to walk away from his subject for fear of offending the government withheld. ZIMBABWE: Justice Minister chastise law faculty
The Zimbabwe Mail reported that Justice Minister Patrick Cinemas has criticized the law faculty of the University of Zimbabwe to engage in politics and to deny its officials access to their lectures.
Cinemas reported claims the faculty turn out a half baked lawyers that legal the country's reputation has been damaged. However, the Mail claimed his comments were designed to draw away the attention from the debilitating condition of higher education in Zimbabwe by Zane-PF's mishandling of the economy and the desire to be seen to the higher education system from expanding despite a critical shortage of resources.
The Mail also condemned the government's interference in the appointment of President Robert Mugabe as the only Chancellor of all universities in the country, and the establishment of the under-qualified party comrades as Pro Vice Chancellors and Executive Deans.

FRANCE: French Professor faces defamation proceedings
Times Higher Education reports that Professor Joseph Wailer, the EU Jean Monnet Professor of Law at the University of New York School of Law, is facing defamation charges in a French court after he refused to draw a negative review a website linked to a magazine that he edits.
The book's author, Karin Calvo-Goller of the Academic Center of Law and Business in Israel, claiming the review, published in 2007, could harm her academic reputation and prevent further advancement. Wailer refused as it is, but the pass comment Calvo-Goller on the reviewer and the chance to be offered an online response to her place to change the review. He has a court order in 2008.
